Dominica was the first island hit by the full category-five force of Hurricane Maria.  Cut off from its Caribbean neighbors after the storm destroyed properties, making communication impossible and cut power and running water.

One of two airports serving the country is inoperable while the other is expected to be operational in the coming days. An estimated 95 percent of the roofs were blown off in some of the communities.
