Israel Houghton On “Indefinite” Leave But Has Not Been “Terminated” From Lakewood Church
There are just certain things that you read about online that make you clutch your pearls. Granted, no one is perfect and without sin, yet we hold people in certain positions in the church to a higher standard. So, when they “fall from grace” if you will the side eye that is given to them is much more severe. If you listen to Christian/Gospel music you may have heard of Israel Hougton, if not you’ve probably heard of him courtesy of gossip blogs now. But he’s recorded several award winning albums, he’s also served in the capacity of worship leader at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Texas.
But his story is getting weirder and weirder as the weeks go by. First Houghton announced that he and his wife of 20 years were getting a divorce. Why you ask? Well he seems to have ‘sinned’ along the way and fesses up to it. Then, earlier this week, we see Adrienne Bailon (former Cheetah girl/Rob Kardashian ex) and Houghton frolicking on the beach seemingly really close and comfortable in each other’s personal space. Soon after reports that she was the cause of the marriage collapse began to circulate. If that wasn’t crazy enough, now we hear Houghton has been relieved of his duties at Lakewood Church.
Dang Bruh! Jesus be the center of it all...because the situation is just far too messy. Attempting to clear it all up Israel got on social media to say that his marriage had been over for some time before he and his wife made the public aware of their plans to end their marriage and before him and Bailon began to date.
“[I]t’s incredibly unfair to allow someone to carry the burden, blame & shame of something they had nothing to do with … I met Adrienne Bailon a bit over 2 years ago, we worked together & became friends. Our circles connected & we remained good friends. From a friendship, as two single adults we have very recently begun to explore a dating relationship,” Houghton wrote on Facebook.
“As I previously wrote in a statement I released a while back, my marriage had been over for quite some time before going public with my divorce announcement,” he continued.
He met The Real co-host years ago, they worked together on a straight to Netflix kind of film and remained friends. Bailon recently ended things with her beaux. Maybe they’re just rebounding. Thursday, he shared a link to an official statement released by the church as a receipt that he had not been fired, but there words just seem like a polite way of saying we have nothing to do with him and this “foolishness that has recently been in the media, but God be with him.”
“We can confirm that Israel is on indefinite leave, but it is important to clarify that we still consider Israel to be a part of the Lakewood family and that his employment has not been terminated,” Lakewood Church said Thursday in a statement.
Maybe I don’t understand the definition of indefinite, but…sounds like they gave him the boot and he out here forgetting how to govern himself accordingly.
