Essince: I talked with you a while back when I was heading to Phoenix and you
were just changing your persona from Juice to Juice McCain. I assumed it related to AZ, but what inspired this?
I’m glad you asked, the name Juice McCain was given to me by my city and my state. I am trying to do something positive for people within my city and give a voice for those that didn’t have one. People started recognizing my movement and the meaning of the name. I am doing for my city and my state what John McCain could not do and i speak for the people that do not have a voice.
Essince: Has anything really changed stylistically from Juice to Juice McCain? Can fans of Juice on “Death Certificate” still vibe with Juice McCain?
Juice and Juice McCain is basically the same individual but Juice McCain is just mature and more musically inclined. Having the opportunity to go on tour with Game and meet other artists gave me a certain motivation to continue to excel and better myself as an emcee and a business man.
Essince: You said in your track, “My Open Letter” “we either grow or we’re growing apart”. How important do you think it is for an artist to grow in order to succeed? Look at Kanye or even the Beatles’ albums and how different they all are from their previous releases.
I think that growth is the most important thing for an artist. There comes a time when certain artists that have that “it” factor need to work a little harder and do a little bit more than the person or people who gave them opportunity for their start. But it’s only right for artists to come into their own and establish their own brand and lane.
Essince: Talk to me a little about your affiliation with Black Wall Street. How is an MC from AZ received in California?
That was one of the hardest places to be accepted. LA is the big city of dreams and for a person, an outsider, who has been stamped as one of the future leaders of the west coast – it was kind of challenging. With my consistent growth and progressive ability LA embraced me as an artist and the city and state that I represent.
Essince: One other thing we have in common I see is international shows. I’ve done work in Japan, Thailand, and the Philippines and I know you’ve been to Europe and Asia as well, what is the reception to you overseas? American music is usually received well in other cultures.
My international and regional fan base is growing by the day and it still amazes me that people in different countries and different cultures, clicks etc. still relate to me as a person and relate to my music.
Essince: What can we expect on this new project? Any features (MC or producer)?
The Progression features Torch of Maybach Music Group, Mysonne, K. Young, Rain, Killa Kyleon, Ryan K. Menace, Hannibal Leq. and Judge. Production from S1 who produced “Power” for Kanye – Vibe and the Olympics who is the production for Jeezy and Rick Ross – and Drumma Boy. This project shows my growth as an artist and my ability to stand on my own two without the security blanket of Game. I had opportunity to pick my own features and producers and pick the type of music that I am influenced by.
