Trina Braxton Exclusive: “Braxton Family Had Issues”
Singer/ Reality Star Trina Braxton whose known for staring on the hit reality show Braxton Family Values with her family has just released her debut single “Party Or Go Home”. I was recently able to speak with Trina about Braxton Family Values, her relationship status with cheating husband Gabe, who her favorite sister is and more!
OMG: Since Braxton Family Values first premiered how has your life changed?
Trina: “As far as family is concerned doing Braxton Family Values has made us realize that we had issues (LOL) that were unspoken or swept under the rug and we were really forced to deal with them. Once we realized we had those issues we were able to have closure with them. On a second note I go to the store and I’ll have people like “Oh my gosh is that you Trina? Can we take a picture?” and I’ll smile from ear to ear and I’m always like OMG yes even if I’m having like a bad hair day. Just don’t talk about me real bad if it’s a bad hair day LOL!”
OMG: We all got to watch your relationship with Gabe play out and I’m sure a lot of people were able to relate to your situation. As of right now what is the status of your relationship?
Trina: “You know a lot of people it seems like has gone through the same situation or they’ve been through something very similar in their relationship and their just kind of like what do you do? How do you do this? And what do you think I should do? The first thing I say is I don’t know because you never know what you’ll do unless you go through something yourself. I have learned to keep my mouth shut with that. As far as the status of Gabe and I, I have filed for divorce however we are being very adult about it. We are talking, we are still raising the children together and we are still praying about his sex addiction therapy that he’s going to a counselor for as well. We’re doing a lot of praying and a lot of keeping outside influences away from our decision making. I think that’s one of the biggest mistakes we’ve made through the seasons of Braxton Family Values.”
OMG: Now that you are officially single what are you looking for in your next man?
Trina: “Well the ink isn’t dry yet LOL so right now I’m concentrating on my career and of course my children. However when I do look for a man he has to be a god fearing man but also has to have balance with it. Please don’t hit me upside the head with a bible and try to beat me to submission cause that’s not hot. I still like to enjoy myself and enjoy my life and have a nice drink or go out. I still like to curse, I like to say shit sometimes (LOL). I also want someone who will appreciate the fact that I have baggage, I have 2 children and we come together. We’re a package deal so if you can’t deal with that then there is no need in even talking to me.”
OMG: On the reunion show Toni kind of hinted that she wasn’t coming back next season is that the case?
Trina: “You know I can’t speak for Toni however I will say that Toni was already established as a superstar. Toni has been a 20 year veteran and being a songstress. She’s already done the television thing, she’s already done the movie thing and Toni has always been very aloof when it comes to talking about her personal business. If you notice when you watch Braxton Family Values she doesn’t talk much about her family as far as her husband or her wasbund and her children are concerned. Toni is just very old school when it comes to airing out your personal laundry on television. And you can’t fault her for it, it’s for some people and it’s not for others. I think she’d rather just go ahead and be Toni the songstress as opposed to Toni the reality TV star.”
OMG: A lot of people think that Tamar’s over the top personality is for the show but at the same time she seems like a genuinely sweet person.
Trina: “Tamar will give you the shirt off her back. Tamar is one of those people whose bark is greater than her bite. But we know how to ignore her because we are her sisters and we’ve endured this for our entire life. I think we’ve allowed her to get away with so much because she’s the baby. Tamar is a very, very giving person and most people they see Tamar and say “Oh you shouldn’t have talked to your sisters that way” and that’s true in a lot of instances don’t misunderstand it, however it does come from a good place most of the time so you got to love her.”
OMG: How excited were you when Tamar and Vince got their own spinoff?
Trina: “I think it’s going to be super exciting because you know what we are her sisters and we know all the different sides of her. We know Tamar the business women, we know Tamar the loud chick, we know Tamar who wants to be the baby sister all the time for the rest of her life, we know Tamar the person who always wants to get her family together. I think it’s going to be good for the public to see her not just in that light to where she’s being the outspoken sister but you get to see more of her being a business women and a wife.”
OMG: How do you feel about the Trayvon Martin case?
Trina: “First of all I’d like to start by saying it’s a travesty and I think president Obama said it best when he was saying that if he had a son that could be his son. Me being a mother of 2 boys and my boys are 17 and 14 years old it could have been my children. My heart goes out to the Martin family and my prayers and I just pray they get justice.”
OMG: Being in the music business for years now I’m sure you got the chance to meet Whitney Houston. How do you feel about her sudden death?
Trina: “I’ve met Whitney on several occasions in my life especially since she and Toni were label mates for so long. However even if I did not get the chance to meet Whitney like a lot of other people in this world she is a musical icon and I think it’s really horrible how her character was almost kind of defamed in the end. But Whitney will always be a superstar, she is a superstar and she has paved the way for so many artists in the world and no matter what anyone says in the media you cannot help but to respect Whitney from the time she came out until the very last breath. I love Whitney, I love her family and I think it’s a tragedy how we lost one of the most wonderful icons in music. But you can’t help but to respect her and still respect her music.”
OMG: I know it’s not nice to play favorites, but who is your favorite sister?
Trina: “I don’t have a favorite sister however we go through seasons of closeness. When Towanda was Toni’s personal assistant they were like peas in a pod, inseparable and now that Towanda is back in Atlanta here with me Towanda and I are very close. Now that Toni and Tamar are in California together Toni and Tamar are very close. And Traci’s in Maryland but my brothers in Maryland along with her so my brother and Traci are very close right now. Even though we all call each other everyday like I said we have periods of closeness depending on what’s going on in our lives. So right now Towanda’s my closest sister.”
OMG: As of right now what are you working on musically?
Trina: “I just released my first single “Party Or Go Home” it’s a very retro, pop dance single. It’s very bubbly and it shows my personality as Trina. This is the first project I’ve ever done recording by myself without my sisters. It allowed me to express myself the way I wanted to do music. As soon as you hear it you want to just get up and dance and enjoy yourself.”
