Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has died at a hospital in Kenya after 80% of her physique was burned in an assault by her companion.
A hospital spokesperson stated the long-distance runner died early after her organs failed. She had been totally sedated on admission to the hospital in Eldoret metropolis.
Cheptegei competed within the girls’s marathon on the Paris Olympics lower than a month earlier than the assault. She completed in forty fourth place.
Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, stated he hoped to get justice for the “very supportive” daughter he had misplaced.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom stated Cheptegei’s companion, Dickson Ndiema, had purchased a can of gasoline, poured it over her and set her ablaze on Sunday.
The Uganda Athletics Federation stated they have been “deeply saddened” concerning the passing of Cheptegei, “who tragically fell sufferer to home violence.”
Uganda Olympic Committee President Donald Rukare known as the assault “a cowardly and mindless act that has led to the lack of an excellent athlete.”
